I devoured, Leaving Blythe River, by Catherine Ryan Hyde. I just couldn’t put it down! The main character, Ethan, is a good guy. It was fun to root for him, as he's the underdog. It was great watching him grow and develop. If you have ever felt insecure, put down, inadequate, and less than OK, then you will find something special in this adventurous coming of age story.Catherine Ryan Hyde is one of my favorite authors and I think that this is her best work yet! She has such a gift and is so very talented. She transported me right into the scenes. When Ethan ate a breakfast burrito, I could almost taste it and wanted one too! I felt Ethan’s exhaustion and physical pain.
I experienced deep emotions…elation…and tears. Catherine always imparts wisdom and life philosophies in her work. And this book does not disappoint. I loved this book! If you aren’t familiar with Catherine Ryan Hyde, this is a wonderful introduction. I highly recommend Leaving Blythe River. You’ll be glad you had this adventure and know this Best Selling, Award Winning author!

Different story, wonderfully told! Seventeen yr. old Ethan, who looks much younger, feels compelled to go into the wilderness to find his missing father, who may or may not even be there, as he is not a very reliable or stable father. The wilderness is as far from Ethan's comfort zone as it gets. Scared and out of his element, he enlists two neighbors for help and starts the journey. This is a coming of age story, but I disagree that it is only for young readers. Perhaps not all of the secondary characters are deeply developed, but it's primarily a story of Ethan's acceptance of himself and his surprise at the endurance, strength, intelligence that he never realized he possessed until put to the test. Not least, his acceptance and forgiveness of parents who are imperfect and arguably less mature than Ethan. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and had a hard time putting it down toward the end. Well written and entertaining.
I have never read one of Hyde's books so I was not sure what to expect. It seems to me this could have been written as a short story then expanded to be a novel. I found it boring and slightly depressing. The only way I can describe it is if this book was on film the actual speed would be very slow making it almost impossible to watch. I will not be trying any other books by Catherine Ryan Hyde.
Catherine Ryan Hyde writes a beautifully-developed story about self-acceptance, overcoming personal fears and learning just how far we are really able to stretch beyond our emotional boundaries. The last thing small, slight, self-conscious 17-year-old Ethan wants to do is spend time in the mountainous wilderness with his narcissistic, extreme athlete father, Noah, whom Ethan despises for various reasons. For father and son, they are polar opposites. Noah runs ~20 miles per day, so it's no surprise to Ethan when he awakens one day to see his father has left their cabin. Ethan presumes he's out running, but when Noah fails to return, Ethan becomes worried.
The next morning, still no sign of Noah. Ethan walks to his nearest neighbor's house...Sam. Ethan's not sure what to do. A professional search is launched but is abandoned after two days because the park ranger finds evidence that Noah might have just abandoned his son. Ethan isn't surprised at this revelation but feels in his gut that his father is still in the wilderness.
Sam, neighbor Jone (the 70-year-old widow Sam has a crush on) and artist-surfer Marcus join Ethan in forming another search party. Weather conditions become poor, the group's will and physical and emotional endurance is tested quite a bit, and eventually one member of the search party abandons the search.
I'll stop here to save the best part of the book for you to discover for yourself. I'll just say that so many emotions coursed through my body...from sadness to happiness to fear to anger to relief to disbelief to sheer joy! This is one of those rare stories I know I'll read again. Don't let this treasure go undiscovered.
Ethan is 17, but barely looks 15! His mom is barely 5 feet tall & Ethan is barely 5'2". His dad is well over 6'2", a very successful business man and addicted to extreme athletics and young girls half his age. He and Ethan are polar opposites.
Ethan and his mom are set to fly to Peru but a ticket mix-up (thanks to his dad's error) results in their returning to their NYC apartment, where his dad had chosen to remain. They let themselves in and find dad and his 24 year old "assistant" nearly naked on the living room sofa! This results in mom leaving to be with her dying mother and Ethan being sent off to Blythe River, where he will have to spend the summer in a tiny A-frame rental house with his father, who runs 20 miles a day up the hiking trails. When after only a few uncomfortable days his dad does not return from his daily run Ethan is left alone with his dog, Rufus, and no idea where his dad is. You will fall in love with Jone and Sam, his only relatively close neighbors in the remote area, who set out with Ethan and Rufus to search the rugged, dangerous trails for his dad. This is a saga that includes facing a Grizzly bear and life-threatening storms as this boy and his newly found elderly neighbors take on the search after the county search team gives up! This small, frail boy with basically no self confidence, must grow into manhood.
Another Hyde book you simply can not put down, filled with characters you will never forget!
